A thousand times yes! Diffuzion back with new material

Posted in News with tags on February 20, 2011 by softsynth

One of the small handful of bands Softsynth has championed over the years is back at exactly the point we were about to write them into a Bands We Miss posting.

Belarus’ Diffuzion came at us with their spectacular debut album Bodycode three years ago but had gone awfully quiet since. They quickly became one of our absolutely favourite bands and we were out of our minds wondering if they had more in the hopper. At last they are back with a new track, “ddb (while you can)” and while we wish the song featured more of singer Xev’s vocals it’s a pretty nifty largely-instrumental track that has whetted our appetite for a new long player.

It simply does not get better than Diffuzion and its our hope that they will quickly find a wider audience embracing their darkwave, industrial-influenced goodness.

Review: Covenant – Modern Ruin

Posted in Review with tags on February 16, 2011 by softsynth

It felt like forever. The interminable wait for the new, oft-delayed Covenant album is over and what we’re left with is…a bit of a mess, frankly.

The Swedish trio behind such electronic classics as Skyshaper and Northern Light was supposed to release this alum over a year ago but delays got in the way. Often, in the film business such repeated delays usually mean the end product is going to be a bit of a dog’s breakfast. Modern Ruin is, sadly, reflective of Covenant’s own morning meal for the family pooch. Continue reading

Yep, we’re on Facebook too…

We’ve received a lot of enquiries from readers as to how to correspond with the author and a steady stream of folks seeking us out on Facebook. To save readers from inadvertently following the dull-ass life of said author, we’re created a Facebook page for the blog. What’s different about the Facebook group is we hope electronic music artists will feel free to use it as a promo cleaning house for their work. Please share what you have going on and we’ll help create a little electronic music share-community. Of course, use responsibly…

Review: Miss FD – Love Never Dies

Posted in Review with tags , on February 15, 2011 by softsynth

Full disclosure, we’ve got a huge soft spot for the erstwhile Frightdoll. She’s become one of the very small cadre of artists we go to the wall for simply because she’s filling an important vacuum, combining the dark with the melodic, the ugly themes with beautiful sounds (and sometimes exactly the other way around). She is fast building a deserved reputation as one of the potentially most important electronic music artists out there, and yes, we’re fully down with the Miss FD action.

Alright, that out of the way, what of the efficiently constructed “bigger-than-an-EP-not-quite-a-full-length-album” Love Never Dies? Well, biases aside, she’s recorded a wonderfully beguiling, sometimes challenging and always compelling follow-up to the terrific Monsters in the Industry. Appropriately released on Valentine’s Day, the album explores themes of love and wanting, but not in a particularly happy way. Lyrically extremely sad, one does not finish their time with Miss FD feeling particularly exultant, but when one listens closely they hear exactly how deep, and layered and absolutely beautiful this collection is. La Roux gets the Grammy

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on February 13, 2011 by softsynth

Posted with minimal comment, as predicted La Roux received the Grammy for Best Electronic Album. Certainly deserved, though not having seen the presentation (as each year this category doesn’t warrant being part of the actual broadcast), we don’t know if the band chose to use their acceptance speech to shit all over the genre in which they won.
