The 2011 Softsynth playlist

So, as we do every year, we have assembled the individual songs that made up the soundtrack for Softsynth this year. We are generally more about albums than singles but there are individual songs that stand on their own as outstanding. Some of these come from albums we found underwhelming as a whole, some were one-off singles, or standouts from excellent EPs.

We don’t do a singles list because as often as not it’s album tracks that get us all hot and bothered but the song collection that truly moved us, our “top 25 songs” to go with our albums of the year, starts with the following:
– Aiboforcen: Time and Space
– Alpine: Hands
– Amy Lee: Halfway Down the Stairs
– Blancmange: The Western
– Bunny Lake (both): Follow the Sun/Young Lovers – Needs noting, other than the new Assemblage 23 album, based on these two outstanding tracks there is no album we are more looking forward to than the new Bunny Lake…
– Covenant: Beat the Noise
– Curxes: Spires
– Firefox AK: Color the Trees
– The Golden Filter: Mother
– Goldfrapp – Yellow Halo
– Huski: Close to the Edge
– IAMX: Oh Beautiful Town
– John Foxx and the Maths – Catwalk
– Lords of Acid: Little Mighty Rabbit
– Lowe: Breathe In Breathe Out
– M83: Raconte-Moi Histoire
– Maison Vague: Synthpop’s Alive
– Marsheaux: Can You Stop Me
– Mirrors: Hide and Seek
– Miss FD: Moment of Fade
– Nothern Kind: Euphonic
– PAKT: Freiheit
– Queen of Hearts: Black Star
– Vile Electrodes: Play With Fire
– VNV Nation: Nova

It’s not exhaustive of course, but it’s a sampling of the incredible electronic songs that floated through the ether in ’11. There’s not as much crossover as one might think with our albums list but the long form album is such a specific creature that individual songs stand on a very different scale. That’s how we saw it in ’11.

Next, the material we’re most looking forward to in ’12…

  1. Excellent! So glad you finally gave props to John Foxx and the Maths – Catwalk is a brilliant song!

  2. I would love if you made a Spotify playlist of this

  3. Wait, the frog song by M83?! That track is fucking horrible! I actually deleted it from itunes so I wouldn’t have to skip it anymore.

Another nice list! And, having recently discovered that my tastes have more than a little in common with the Softsynth crew’s, I decided that the Spotify playlist Chris suggests above was a moral imperative so that I could start finding out what I was missing. (Quite a bit, as it turns out.) Interested parties can find it here:

This is a 141-track mega-playlist of Softsynth’s 2009-2011 playlists, as well as their selected tracks from their top 10 albums from each of those years. Note that Spotify doesn’t have everything: as much as 10% of the combined playlists may be missing here, especially the most recent songs. But it’s a start!
